Welcoming the AF-100

So I recently received my newest addition to my camera collection, the Panasonic AF-100.  There are countless sites and blogs that talk about this camera, so I will not go into lengthy details on what this camera does, etc.  Most of you that are reading this post probably know a fair bit about this camera already, but I just wanted to post some of my initial reactions to working with it.  My time with it has been a bit brief, do to a busy month involving staying home with my son for a week, and some other shoots out of town where the new camera was not the desired tool for the job.  That said, I’ve had a fair amount of time to play with it at home, and have taken it on a few jobs.  Next month I start some big projects where the AF will be the main camera, so I think pretty soon, I will know all the tricks for getting this camera to sing. It’s small, it’s HD!

So back in April I wrote my recap of attending my first NAB conference.  I discussed how one of the items I was checking out to buy was a new HD field monitor.  I wanted something to work with my 7D (which I was starting to use more then) and my EX-1 (as well as any other camera going forward).  I was most interested in the existing Marshall 7″ offering, the prototype Marshall 5″ and the SmallHD DP-6.  I settled on the SmallHD and soon after returning from NAB, pre-ordered one.  The big selling point for me (other than image quality) was that the DP6 would have HDMI, Component AND HD-SDI inputs.  Neither of the Marshall monitors had that.  This meant it would work with any camera out there, which was a huge plus.  They “guaranteed” that we would have the monitor 75 days after purchase.  That was fine; I wasn’t in a huge rush. A Nice Set of Legs

I wasn’t planning to do a review of my new purchase, but some Twitter buddies were curious about my new tripod, so I thought I’d post a little overview. It just arrived yesterday and has not gone on a shoot yet, but I played with it a bit today and can go over some of the features. The tripod in question is the Manfrotto (Bogen) 535 Carbon Fiber legs with the new 504HD head. I wanted a second tripod and when I was at NAB, in April, that was one of the things I was looking for. Image Source Beauty Shoots

I intercut footage from two “beauty” stock shoots for Image Souce. Shot on the Sony EX-1 and the Canon 5DMk2, I think this shows the interesting similarities and differences between these two cameras, in fairly similar setups.  You can read more about it on my blog here.

What Happens at Blogs With Balls…

Here is one of the recap videos I put together for the Blogs With Balls conference that I shot at in Las Vegas.  I assure you, this was as much hard work as it looks.  Read more about this trip here.

Beauty and Beautiful Cameras

This past week I had two shoots in NYC for Image Source.  I did my first shoot with them back in December and it was their first time using the Canon 5DMkII, but they were thrilled with what they got from it and liked the stuff I was shooting.  The client I worked with on that shoot (Lisa Curesky) passed my name on to other art directors at Image Source and photographers they work with, which landed me these gigs.  I went into these jobs pretty stoked as the content of these shoots (“beauty”) was different than what I am used to.  I have certainly shot a ton of people with the goal of making them look as good as possible, Read more…

Kiva Sytems – The Magic Shelf

Kiva Sytems – The Magic Shelf

This is one of the fun videos I have shot for Kiva Systems.  This video explains the basic concept behind their product.  We wanted to use more of a storytelling approach instead of a straight-forward explanation of the product.

Chasing Robots

The other week I had a long week of travel, shooting videos for Kiva Systems.  Kiva makes robots and software used in order fulfillment distribution centers.  I have been working with them for about two and half years now; they were one of my first clients when I went freelance and also one of the only jobs to come through Craigslist.  (I have done about a dozen videos for them now, so it just goes to show to keep your eyes open for all possible job leads.)  This particular job was to do two case study videos on two of their clients, DJO Medical Devices and Diapers.com.  Our plan included shoots in three cities (Indianapolis, San Diego and Reno) Read more…

Romeo Files – First 7D Experiences

Yesterday I did a shoot for a new web-series for Our Spirit (who I did another video for earlier this year).  We were supposed to do our second (and final) day of shooting today, but we had to cancel due to bad weather, so we will resume next weekend.  This will be a five episode (each 2-3 minutes long) series that will be released every few weeks on the Our Spirit site starting next year.  Due to schedules and budget the entire shoot was slated for two days, which made for a very tight schedule, but we got through everything we needed to film yesterday. Frankly, I think that my experience with working on the 48-Hour Films helped in working on such a tight schedule. Read more…

Blogs with Balls Wrap-up and Highlights Video

I returned the beginning of this week from Blogs with Balls in Las Vegas.  Visiting Vegas, even if it is for work, can be a risky place but I came back in one piece and not completely broke.  (I fared better than my traveling companion Rob Baker, who came back with a case of H1N1.  No joke.  Although he is doing much better now.)  The folks from HHR Media put on an excellent conference, that was well-attended and had some great panelists.  I got the sense that for people in the sports blogging world, who are doing this as a business, this event was one not to be missed.  Unfortunately as a mostly non-sports fan some of the names, faces, and discussions were lost on me, but it was clearly a successful event.
